Tutoring

  • What is the My Sprint difference?

At My Sprint we fight for every last piece of your child's potential.

We're as focused on what your child hasn't learnt in the past as we are on their next exam. We have developed our own diagnostic testing and teaching resources to identify and correct these gaps during each term based "Sprint". Closing these gaps provides the foundation for your child's confidence and academic resilience over time. It also allows us to share their ongoing progress with you from an objective and independent perspective.

  • What does tutoring with My Sprint cost?

Tutoring starts at $60 per hour in Sydney and $49 per hour in Wollongong, Newcastle and the Central Coast. We don't offer flat pricing because it can limit the choice of parents and students to access the teacher or tutor that could make the difference for your child. Ask us about our discount for paying for the term upfront.

Tutoring starts at $60 per hour in Melbourne and $49 per hour in Geelong, Ballarat & Bendigo.

  • How long do I need to commit for?

Whilst we don't enforce any commitment, we ask you to make a commitment term by term so your child and our tutor (or teacher) has certainty, and together they have time to close the gaps that have been identified from our own diagnostic testing during their first session.
  • What are my payment options?

You can choose to pay fortnightly or we offer a 5% discount for full payment of each term upfront. All payments can be made using any Visa, Mastercard or American Express credit, debit or charge card.
  • How do we select our tutors?

All of our tutors are chosen because they have distinguished themselves personally in the HSC, VCE or International Baccalaureate and they have proven capabilities instilling the same confidence in others.

We verify every teacher and tutor's Working With Children Check.

  • What's involved in sourcing the right Tutor?

When you start the process of selecting a tutor for your child you're effectively taking on the burden of a recruitment process. The stars have to align to find the right tutor that is available, fits your schedule and lives within a 5-10 minute drive. You're forced to put logistics ahead of selecting the best tutor for your child. We take that burden and uncertainty away.
  • Can I change tutors if I'm not happy?

Yes. You can have a conversation with us any time. Rest assured though that we go to a lot of effort upfront to ensure the teacher or tutor is just right for your child.
  • What years, subjects and curriculums do you offer tutoring for?

We specialise in tutoring secondary school students (years 7-12) in maths, english, science, humanities, technologies and language subjects working towards their HSC, VCE and IB credentials.
  • Can you do more than one session per week?

Yes you can. Please let us know in our first conversation with you. In some circumstances we may recommend this as well.
  • Why do we do diagnostic testing?

Our subject tests are purpose designed to give you, your child and My Sprint a benchmark from which their personal program for the term is developed. The next exam is always important, but so is identifying and closing any skills or knowledge gaps that have the potential to dent your child's future confidence.
  • Why do we do our own testing and not just ask for past exams?

The last few exams only gives us a limited understanding of your child's performance when compared to their peer group, not just at the same school, but across the state. We don't want to leave any element of your child's confidence to chance.
  • What's involved in our diagnostic test?

It's approximately a 20-30 minute test for year 7-10 students for each subject and is customised for each student to match the teaching of the syllabus at their school. It's approximately a 40 minute test for year 11 and 12 students for each subject.
  • What subjects and year groups do we offer diagnostic testing for?

We currently offer testing in NSW for English for years 9-10 and for HSC students studying the Engish Standard and English Advanced courses.

In Victoria we offer testing for year 11-12 students studying English for their VCE.

We will offer testing for all Maths subjects across years 7-12 in NSW and VIC during the first quarter of 2019.

This will be progressively expanded upon according to the needs of our students.

  • What are the advantages of online tutoring?

    • Watch any session again when you need to revise
    • Save all of your notes just like you would offline
    • Access tutors from outside your immediate area
    • Work with your favourite tutor anywhere that suits you
  • Is there a minimum session length?

Yes. In order to address both new work and the identified gaps in knowledge from our own testing, we need a minimum session of 1.5 hours each week per subject for year 11 and 12 students. The minimum session for years 7-10 is 1 hour.
  • Is there a maximum session length?

No. Practically though, most students' sweet spot won't be much beyond 2 hours per subject.
  • Can the session length vary during the term?

Yes. This has to be organised ahead of schedule with My Sprint directly to make sure that the tutor can be available.

Online Tutoring

  • What browsers/devices does My Sprint run on and how much bandwidth is the user required to have?

My Sprint currently works on Safari, Chrome (including Chromebooks), Firefox and Edge without requiring a plugin, including iPad, iPhone and Android tablets/phones. Minimum bandwidth when using video or desktop sharing is 256kbps upload and download, but 512kbps recommended.

  • Can I use a graphics tablet with My Sprint?

Yes, you can use any graphics tablet with Groupworld if it works as a pointer device. Wacom and Huion graphics tablets work well with My Sprint, and many of our online tutoring customers use these graphics tablets.

  • Why do I hear an echo of my own voice when using the voice conferencing?

This generally means that another user has loudspeakers which are feeding back into their microphone. Ideally all users should have wired earphones or wired headsets when using the voice conferencing. This issue can also occur with some sound cards if you have not explicitly selected a recording source in the Windows Recording Volume Control, or if the headset is poor quality.

If you cannot resolve the echos, try using Firefox which has built-in echo cancellation (note that if you are hearing an echo it means the other user will need to use Firefox or get a headset). Also note that the Apple AirPods and iPhone earphones will generate echos when used in a laptop.

  • I get delays/breakups with the sound/video.

Generally this indicates a poor internet connection or insufficient bandwidth. Please let your tutor know if you continue having problems.

  • The audio does not work at all.

    General Audio Troubleshooting

    • If you experience echos, make sure both users are using headphones or a headset designed for video conferencing.
    • Wired headsets are best to avoid any sound issues. We recommend not using Apple AirPods or iPhone earphones as they are not fully compatible with Macs, so you may still experience echos.
    • Make sure you plug in your headset before logging in. If you plug in your headset in after connecting to the My Sprint room and it isn't working, try reloading the web page.
    • Make sure your headset is properly plugged in, and that you have given permission to the browser to use your microphone (see below for more details).
    • Try reloading the My Sprint room web page, or using a different browser if you have problems. Chrome and Firefox work best.
    • When you speak, you should see a horizontal red bar move underneath your video window. You will also see a red circle light up under your video. If you don't see these, it means that the MY Sprint room is not picking up your microphone.
    • When the other user speaks, you should see a green triangle light up under their video window. If you see the green triangle light up but don't hear anything, it means that your headphones aren't working. Try reloading the page and check your headphones are set up correctly. (Check to see if you can listen to a youtube video through them).
    • If the other user reports that your voice is breaking up, check your microphone volume. You will see the volume controls underneath the video windows. When you speak, the red bar should fill at least 50% of the rectangle. If that does not happen, try increasing your microphone volume.

    Chrome microphone/webcam permissions

Chrome will pop up a permissions window when you log into your My Sprint room.

Simply click "Allow" to give permission to use your microphone. You only need to do this once, and Chrome will remember in future.

To change your microphone settings in Chrome (assuming you have already given or denied permission to use your microphone), click on the little icon at the right-hand side of the url bar that looks like a video camera:

This will allow you to select a different microphone (if your computer has more than one). If the video camera icon has a red X through it, clicking it will allow you to give permission to My Sprint in future (you will need to reload the page afterwards).

If you previously denied permission to allow microphone/webcam access, you can reset the chrome audio/video permissions.

    Firefox microphone/webcam permissions

Firefox will pop up a permissions window when you log into My Sprint:

Simply click "Share selected devices" to give My Sprint permission to use your microphone and/or camera. You can choose "Always share" from the drop-down menu (to the right of the "Share selected devices" button) if you always want to give permission.

To change your microphone settings in Firefox (assuming you have already given or denied permission to use your microphone), click on the little icon at the left-hand side of the url bar that looks like a video camera:

This will allow you to select a different microphone (if your computer has more than one), or give permission if you previously didn't give permission.

    Safari microphone/webcam permissions

Safari will pop up a permissions window when you log into My Sprint:

Simply click on "Allow" to give My Sprint permission to use your microphone and/or camera. If you don't see this popup, go to "Safari->Settings for this website" and check the Camera and Microphone permissions.

  • I'm experiencing crashes/slowness/lost connections.

    • Check out our client system requirements below to make sure your system is supported.
    • Try temporarily disabling browser toolbars, virus checkers and security software in case they are interfering with My Sprint (normally this should not be the case, so please let us know if you do experience any incompatibilities with other software).
    • Bring up task manager (press the ctrl+alt+delete keys in Windows; press the command & space bars on Mac and search for "Activity Monitor") to see if another process is using all of your computer's cpu or memory.
    • Try pinging www.groupworld.net to see if there are any network problems. In Windows, bring up a DOS window and type "ping www.groupworld.net". If you experience more than 10% data loss, performance will be affected.
